1. Summary
We collect a small amount of information: your email address when you sign up for the compliance calendar or purchase a workbook; your name and payment information when you purchase a workbook (processed by Gumroad, not stored by us); your interaction with our emails. We use this information to deliver the products and content you signed up for. We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information with third parties for their marketing purposes. We do not track you across the internet.
The full version below covers the details.
2. Geographic Scope
Arbiter HR products and content are intended for customers in the United States only. By purchasing a workbook or subscribing to our email list, you represent that you are accessing our services from the United States.
We do not knowingly serve customers outside the United States. If we identify a non-US purchase, we refund the transaction promptly per our Refund Policy. If we identify a non-US email subscriber and verify it, we remove them from our list.
This Privacy Policy is written for a US audience. We do not currently process information about subjects of the European Union, United Kingdom, or other non-US jurisdictions in a manner that triggers their data protection regimes.
3. Information We Collect
We collect three categories of information.
3.1 Information you provide directly
When you sign up for the free 2026 HR Compliance Calendar or subscribe to our email list, you provide your email address. You may also optionally provide your name. We use Kit (our email service provider) to manage email subscriptions.
When you purchase a workbook through Gumroad, Gumroad collects your name, email address, billing address, and payment card information. Gumroad processes the payment and shares your name and email address with us for order fulfillment. Gumroad does not share your full payment card information with us; we do not see or store credit card numbers.
When you correspond with us at hello@arbiterhr.com, we receive your email address and the content of your message.
3.2 Information we collect automatically
When you visit arbiterhr.com, we may automatically collect limited technical information such as your browser type, the pages you visit, and the time and duration of your visit. This information is collected through standard server logs and basic analytics. We do not use behavioral advertising trackers, cross-site tracking pixels, or third-party advertising cookies on arbiterhr.com.
Our email service provider (Kit) records whether emails we send are opened or whether links are clicked, using standard email pixel and link-tracking mechanisms. This data is used by us to evaluate email content quality and is not shared externally for marketing purposes.
3.3 Information we do not collect
To be specific about what we don't collect:
- We do not collect information about your employees, your company's headcount, your workforce composition, your business operations, or your HR practices. Our workbooks are static reference materials that you download to your own systems; we receive no information about how you use them.
- We do not collect demographic information about you (age, race, gender, etc.).
- We do not collect sensitive personal information (Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, health information, etc.).
- We do not collect information about minors. Arbiter HR products are for HR and payroll professionals and are not directed at children. If we learn we have inadvertently collected information from a person under 18, we will delete it.
4. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect for these purposes:
- Deliver the products and content you signed up for. Send the compliance calendar, deliver workbook downloads, send monthly refresh emails, respond to your support inquiries.
- Operate and improve Arbiter HR. Evaluate which content resonates, identify operational issues, prioritize product development.
- Communicate with you about Arbiter HR. Send transactional emails about your purchases, occasional updates about new workbooks or material changes to existing ones.
- Detect and prevent abuse. Identify patterns of activity that suggest fraud, abuse, unauthorized access, or violations of our Terms.
- Comply with legal obligations. Respond to lawful requests from government authorities, defend against legal claims, and meet record-keeping requirements.
5. Who We Share Information With
We do not sell personal information. We share information with the following categories of recipients and only for the purposes described:
5.1 Service providers (subprocessors)
- Gumroad. Processes workbook purchases and delivers workbook files. Receives your name, email, billing information, and payment information at the point of purchase. Gumroad's privacy practices are governed by Gumroad's own privacy policy at gumroad.com/privacy.
- Kit (formerly ConvertKit). Manages our email list, sends marketing and transactional emails, and provides email engagement analytics. Receives your email address and email engagement data.
- Resend. Sends transactional emails (workbook delivery confirmations, customer service responses, account-related messages). Receives your email address and the content of transactional emails sent to you.
- Hosting and infrastructure providers. Standard web hosting and analytics infrastructure for arbiterhr.com.
We require each service provider to handle information only as needed to provide their service to us and to maintain reasonable security practices.
5.2 Business transitions
If Slate Holdings LLC is acquired, merges with another entity, sells substantially all of its assets, or undergoes any similar corporate transaction, customer information may be transferred to the successor entity as part of that transaction. We will notify active customers and email subscribers by email at least 30 days before such a transfer occurs, except where the transaction is required to close on a shorter timeline by law or by the terms of the transaction.
If Arbiter HR is discontinued, we will notify customers and email subscribers at least 60 days in advance and provide instructions for downloading any saved content before service ends.
5.3 Legal compliance
We may share information when required to do so by law, legal process, or government request. We may also share information when necessary to enforce our Terms of Service, protect our rights or property, or protect the safety of any person.
6. How Long We Keep Information
We keep information only as long as we need it for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or as required by law.
- Email subscribers (no purchase): retained until you unsubscribe. Unsubscribed addresses are kept on a suppression list to honor your unsubscribe request and prevent re-sending.
- Workbook customers: purchase records and contact information retained for the duration of your customer relationship, plus 7 years thereafter for tax and accounting purposes.
- Customer correspondence: retained for 24 months from the date of the last interaction, or longer for support escalations or complaint records.
- Technical logs: retained for 90 days then deleted in the normal rotation, except where retained longer for security investigation purposes.
- Backups: backup copies of our systems may retain information for up to 60 additional days after deletion from active systems, until the backups are overwritten in the normal rotation.
7. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. These include encryption of data in transit, access controls on internal systems, and selection of service providers that maintain industry-standard security practices.
No security program is perfect, and we cannot guarantee that information transmitted to or stored by us will always remain secure. If we become aware of a security incident affecting your information, we will notify you and any applicable regulators as required by law.
8. Your Rights and Choices
8.1 Email subscriptions
You can unsubscribe from any Arbiter HR email at any time using the unsubscribe link in the email or by emailing hello@arbiterhr.com. Unsubscribing removes you from marketing and update emails. You may continue to receive transactional emails related to past purchases (such as refresh emails for workbooks you've bought, or customer service responses) unless you specifically request otherwise.
8.2 Access, correction, and deletion
You have the right to ask us what information we hold about you, request corrections to inaccurate information, and request deletion of your information. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@arbiterhr.com with your request. We will respond within 30 days.
We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling a request — typically by confirming you have access to the email address associated with the information.
Some information may be subject to retention requirements (for example, tax records for past purchases) that prevent us from deleting it on request. We will let you know if this applies to any portion of your request.
8.3 California residents
If you are a California resident, you have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). These rights include the rights described in Section 8.2 above, plus the right to know the categories of information we collect and the categories of third parties with whom we share it (covered in Sections 3 and 5 of this Policy), and the right to opt out of any "sale" or "sharing" of personal information.
We do not sell personal information and do not share personal information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising. There is nothing to opt out of in those categories.
To exercise CCPA/CPRA rights, email hello@arbiterhr.com. We will respond within 45 days, with an additional 45 days available for complex requests. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
8.4 Other US states
Customers in other states with consumer privacy laws (Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, and others as those laws come into effect) have similar rights to access, correct, and delete information. To exercise these rights, email hello@arbiterhr.com.
9. Children's Privacy
Arbiter HR products and content are intended for HR and payroll professionals and are not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If we learn we have inadvertently collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.
10. Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
Arbiter HR honors Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals to the limited extent applicable to our practices. Since we do not engage in cross-context behavioral advertising and do not "sell" or "share" personal information for advertising purposes, there are no GPC-controlled practices that apply to our handling of your information. We are noting GPC support here for transparency.
Browser-level Do Not Track signals are not honored as a uniform standard, but our underlying practices already align with what Do Not Track is intended to accomplish.
11. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email to active customers and email subscribers at least 30 days before they take effect. The effective date at the top of this Policy reflects the most recent version.
Changes to this Policy do not apply retroactively to information already collected.
